Our Story

Restoring a Dorset landmark reimagined for a new generation
our history

Back to where it all began...

Opened in 1933, The Sunray has changed hands (and names) a few times over nearly a century, but it’s now been returned to its original identity after a four-year, multi-million-pound restoration that began in 2022.

Steeped in local history – and, according to wartime lore, a favourite hideaway for high-ranking officers who used “Sunray” as a code to slip away and relieve themselves of their duties with a cold beverage.

The pub is now once again a warm, characterful landmark for Osmington and the surrounding areas.

respecting our environment

Sustainable stays, naturally

At The Sunray, the landscape is not simply a backdrop — it is part of the experience. Set between the rolling Dorset countryside and the Jurassic Coast, this historic site has been carefully restored with a deep respect for the natural environment that surrounds it. From the way our cottages are built to the way the land is cared for, every decision has been guided by a simple principle: to tread lightly while creating a place of comfort and beauty.

Behind the scenes, a number of thoughtful systems work quietly to reduce our environmental impact. Natural resources from beneath the Dorset landscape help support the cottages, while modern energy solutions and efficient design ensure each stay is both comfortable and responsible. Many of these elements are intentionally subtle — designed to enhance the experience without ever distracting from the peace of the setting.

Beyond the cottages, nature has been given space to thrive. Across the site you’ll find areas dedicated to wildlife, carefully considered planting and small details built into the fabric of the buildings themselves to support birds, bats and pollinators. It’s all part of a long-term approach to stewardship — ensuring that this special place remains just as beautiful, wild and welcoming for generations to come
